Backhaul Definition:

Backhaul is the return trip or movement of a container by the same truck that initially delivered the load from its destination back to its original start point.

In backhaul, the truck ships the container back over part or all of the original transit route. The container or cargo may be less-than-truck, full, or partial load but follow the same pathway. Backhauling presents various benefits, including optimizing fuel usage, enhancing client satisfaction, leading to new business opportunities, improving a company’s capacity, and more. It also helps minimize or lower empty miles, which helps utilize shipping resources fully with minimal environmental impact.
