Ingate Definition:

This is a point of interchange when a container is received by a water or rail terminal as it enters another shipping mode.

Ingate is checking a cargo container into an intermodal facility or point or when a driver enters a container yard or terminal with a cargo container. These could also be units entering a railroad terminal over the road from a shipping company. The process includes freight charges and also terminal handling costs. The in-gate process includes other procedures such as reservation confirmation, data input into computer systems, unit inspection, and filling out the other vital forms, such as J-1.
