House Bill Of Lading (HBL)

HBL is a document issued by a freight forwarder or Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) acknowledging cargo receipt from a supplier.

HBL is a key or core document in the ocean freight process that acts as legal proof of cargo ownership being shipped. The document also assures that the consignment or shipment is safe, intact, and ready to be delivered to the consignee. The HBL shows the exporter’s and importer’s details, including name and address, cargo information, the goods’ monetary value, the transport mode used, and the shipment’s terms and conditions.
